Burden of Maturity [A: tLA, Zuko & Iroh, G] Title: Burden of Maturity Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender Rating: G Genre: Vignette Words 300 Notes/Warnings: Done for avatar_contest @ LJ (week #25: Burdens Taken). I have not seen beyond "Day of Black Sun", so may be Jossed. Summary: Three looks at Zuko's burdens as he grows up. Disclaimer: Avatar: The Last Airbender copyright Michael Dante DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko/Nickelodeon and this derivative work was created without permission.
~1~ Zuko often wondered why he didn't put Iroh off the ship the next time they made port. He didn't take anything seriously -- it was all about his tea, and his board games, and Music Night and acting like they were on some kind of cruise, instead of an urgent mission.
But, the crew liked Iroh, and Iroh was helping him practice Firebending, and it would be hard for an old man to travel alone.
Zuko didn't admit that he liked having his uncle around. Iroh was a promise that he could regain his family's esteem.
~2~ Zuko's fever had broken; he would be up tomorrow. Not ready to do heavy lifting but he could help with the final touches for the tea shop. At the least, Iroh knew Zuko was unhappy when he was kept in close quarters. Making him stay in their apartment until he was completely better would just cause him to malinger.
"You've carried so many burdens for so long, nephew," he said to Zuko, who slept untroubled by the fever dreams of earlier. "I hope that you'd finally lifted them from your shoulders and set them aside."
~3~ I want to apologize. For years, you followed me, putting up with my tantrums and trying to keep me safe and actually teach me something. And I never got it. I wondered why you were such a burden to me; now I wonder how you felt when I was a burden to you. A man of half your patience and good temper would have never gotten the Fire Nation with me.
I nearly said this in Ba Sing Sei, but then Azula happened, and everything got mixed up again, but: I'm proud you're my uncle.
