Last Favor [Discworld, Granny, G]
Title: Last Favor
Fandom: Discworld
Rating: G
Genre: Vignette
Words: 200
Notes/Warnings: Done for "the justice of my quarrel" @ 31_days.
Summary: The surest way to annoy a witch is to do her a favor she can't repay. It upsets the balance of things.
Disclaimer: Discworld copyright Terry Pratchett and this derivative work was created without permission.

Before she was Granny, and had planted her infamous garden, Esme Weatherwax used to gather her herbs on the hillsides in spring. She and old Goody Crosswise, who lived in the next village over from Bad Ass, both had the same alpine meadow they had staked out. And sometimes Esme would be the first up there on spring mornings, and sometimes -- most times -- Goody would give her a wave as she finished clearing out the best patches.

Of course, she could have camped out there, because Goody's arthritis would never let her sleep on the ground, but that would be cheating.

One morning, in late spring, Esme climbed the path, only to see Goody already heading down. She waved as the younger witch watched passed, her hands empty of herbs. When Esme returned to her cottage, her basket full of the herbs Goody didn't pick, she found the funeral invitation under a rock on her stoop.

She wasn't in charge of laying out the body. Her only offering was the dried herbs she had picked that last morning. Fair was fair, after all, and she was not one to be owed a favor.

That's beautiful, and a great use of the prompt.

It's funny. I had intended to write a Slayers story, but someone had already written one with the exact same character, and a similar premise that I was intending to write for this prompt. So I started brainstorming other canons I could use and jumped to Discworld.

Overall, I think I like this better than what I was going to write.

My friend wrote that Slayers one! XD I liked it... but the world really needs more Discworld fic, especially about Esme, and this was really original.

Thanks. I've done a couple of drabbles, but I keep meaning on trying a longer fic, even if I have to use Yuletide Treasures/New Years Resolutions as a motivation/source of prompts.

I like how self-contained this piece is, saying everything it needs to in a concise space.

Thanks. That's generally what I try to shoot for in my drabbles and other short fics.
